The Pilot Plant Chemical Technician will support the BHGE Oilfield Chemicals business via safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the Chemicals Pilot Plant. This position will work directly with the Pilot Plant Scientists and Technicians to monitor and conduct large-scale chemical reactions, provide product samples, and develop new product production processes for commercial application. A strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely operate large-scale equipment in a combined chemical research and production environment is required.
Performing Chemical Pilot Plant testing according to the experimental plan. This includes collecting raw materials, cleaning and setting up reactors, operating and maintaining reactors, product sampling, and disposal of any waste.
Accurately record and maintain data logs detailing Pilot Plant operating and process conditions and generate written reports as needed. Input data into programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word.
Operate the Pilot Plant equipment safely, in accordance to Standard Operating Procedures, and in a manner to ensure product and process quality. Correct minor operational irregularities and recommend improvements to processes and job procedures.
Complete required training, including refresher courses, and maintain current training records.
Write and audit work permits as needed. Ensure compliance with BHGE’s Management of Change process.
Analyze and assess Safety Data Sheets to identify potential hazards and develop plans to mitigate associated risks.
Assist senior Pilot Plant personnel to maintain and troubleshoot cooling water, vacuum, nitrogen, and oxide distribution and scrubber systems.
Associates or bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years of experience, or equivalent.
1-3 years of experience in chemical plant, lab, or pilot plant environment – operation, synthesis, blending, or QC.
Ability to accurately weigh and dose raw materials in lab or large-scale reactors.
Basic math and analytical skills.
Must be a team player with good people skills and the desire to develop new skills that will benefit the team. Must be willing and able to collaborate with, and assist other team members to effectively complete project work and modify and improve procedures.
Must be able to work outdoors in temperatures ranging from 32 to over 110 degrees.
Basic maintenance skills, including mechanical, pipe-fitting, electronics and/or DCS skills; ability to assemble and disassemble Pilot Plant equipment.
Computer-related and software-related skills: Words, Excel, and PowerPoint
Good verbal and written communication skills. Must be willing and able to communicate project status and results in an effective and timely manner.
Ability to climb stairs and routinely lift 25 to 50 pounds.
Be able to work overtime when needed.
- 3-5 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing plant, pilot plant, lab, or oil/gas industrial environment.
